Larkspur, The Colony

“Are you sure you know what you’re doing?” I watched my sister, Lavender, be-bop around the medical station like she had a dance groove radio station playing in her head. She wore a green uniform, just like the rest of the medical staff. The only indication she was in training were a couple stripes on her shoulders.

“Of course. Otherwise, Doctor Surnen wouldn’t let me near a patient.”
“I’m not a patient. I’m your sister.”

“Yeah, yeah.” Lavender waved one of the alien gadgets over my eyes again. “Stare into the scanner thing.”

“You don’t even know what it’s called?” I hadn’t mastered using all the comms equipment needed to assist Lindsey with The Colony’s media and promotions department—she was determined to get all the veterans on the planet more brides—but I knew what they were called. And I was also doing what I loved, investigations, interviews, writing compelling stories. I had my dream job, it was just on a different planet. Luckily, Lavender seemed to have landed on her feet here as well.

Lavender laughed. “Of course I do, but the name is ridiculous. Way too long and technical. These aliens take themselves way too seriously.”

I couldn’t help it, my sister’s happiness was contagious. “Better working on people than pets?” She had wanted to be a veterinarian since we were little. She seemed content now, but we’d learned over the years never to take anything for granted. So I asked her, just to be sure, and took a sip of my nice, hot tea.
“Don’t tell anyone, but when they come in, especially the growly ones who got hurt fighting in the pit, I pretend they are oversized puppies.”

I nearly spit the tea all over her pretty green uniform. “Lav!”

“Shhh!”

We were both giggling when Doctor Surnen entered the room, Kai hot on his heels.

“Have you found anything?” Kai asked. He meant had the doctors discovered why the Nexus unit had been so adamant about taking me away and making me his ‘daughter’. Or why I could hear him in my head even though I didn’t have any Hive integrations.

“No. We believe there may be something unique to human DNA that allows for a quantum connection between their consciousness and that of the Nexus units. We are not sure yet. The analysis might take months.”

Whoa. That was the first I was hearing of woo-woo consciousness and quantum anything. “Wait a minute.” I leaned around my enthusiastic sister and her gadgets to address the doctor. “You mean I’m psychic? I don’t understand what you mean by quantum connection.”

The Prillon doctor walked to a screen and pulled up a detailed image of a human brain.
“Is that my brain?” I asked.

“Yes. And here is Lavender’s.” Another brain scan appeared on an adjacent screen. “And Rachel’s. Lindsey’s. I have scanned all of you and found an interesting electromagnetic phenomenon centered around what humans call the pineal gland.”

Lavender stopped scanning me and plopped down next to me on the medical bed to look at the brain scans scattered all over the walls. “Isn’t it cool?”

“Yes?” Was it? “So that peanut shaped thing in the middle of our brains is how Nexus 5 was talking to me?”

Doctor Surnen was a large Prillon warrior with a scowl that rivaled Helion’s. If I hadn’t met his human mate, Mikki, a lovely human woman from Hawaii, I would have been intimated by the intensity of his focus when he turned to me. “Telepathy. Yes. I have a theory that is also how he tracks the females he is interested in acquiring, through quantum entanglement. I believe this is similar to the way Elite Hunters from Everis can track their prey through time and space through no logical or obvious means. Conscious focus and intention have effects beyond the world we can see and experience.”

“I’m entangled with Nexus 5?” Talk about creepy. I didn’t even need to reach for Kai, he was there, his hand on the small of my back. I leaned into him and thanked god, the universe, or fate for bringing him into my life. I did that a lot, still couldn’t believe how lucky I was being mated to my strong, sexy beast. God he was hot. And good in bed. His tongue?

I had to stop or I’d be a horny, squirming mess in front of the doctor. Knowing my luck, Lavender would scan me with one of her thing-a-ma-jigs and announce my arousal to the room. The thought made me grin. She’d do it, too.

“How do we break this entanglement?” Kai’s deep voice sounded rough, his beast rumbling to the surface at the threat to me.

“We’re still working on that.” The doctor tilted his head, inspecting the lot of us. “Until we have an answer, I suggest you remain vigilant.”

I’d only had the strange push-pull of magnets inside my head feeling a couple times the last few weeks. Both times, I’d started singing and the feeling faded. I looked up at Kai. “We’ll be okay.”

He leaned down, as I knew he would, and kissed me in front of everyone. I kissed him back.

When Lavender cleared her throat—irritating little sister—I smiled up into the dark, amber eyes of the male I loved, and smiled. “I guess you’ll just have to keep singing to me.”

Kai’s smile made my heart melt. “It will be my pleasure, mate.”

No, listening to him sing was my guilty pleasure. The sound of his voice made me want to strip him naked and ride him like a wild thing.

The thought must have shown through my eyes because the next thing I knew I was cradled in Kai’s arms and he was carrying me out of the room.

“Take a break, you two!” Lavender’s laughter followed us down the hall.

“Like you can talk!” I yelled back.

“Some of us have to work, big sister.” Her voice grew distant as Kai picked up his pace, his beast showing through. I loved it when his beast came to me, hot and wild, and Kai followed up with hours of intense, passionate seduction. I had everything a woman could ever want. Everything.

Work could definitely wait…
